We asked, and over 200 SMEs responded: what are the most relevant sources of funding?

Company capitalisation is crucial for them to realise their investment plans, as well as to carry out their current financial management. Did you know that 88.1% of companies identified PT2030 as one of the most relevant funding sources? Find out why!

Support for Financing and Investment

In deciding which funding source is most relevant, 88.1% of companies chose financial incentives under Portugal 2020/2030, the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), among others, as those that arouse the most interest, in the SME Heroes Barometer - a Yunit study on the capacity for adaptation and overcoming of SMEs.

On the one hand, the generality of this support results in non-repayable incentives, so this preference is not surprising. On the other hand, these are funding sources that stem from framing within scopes and strategies not always within reach of projects or company needs.

Bank financing, with 64.1%, was the second selected funding source. Banks are traditionally the companies' main partner, given permanent treasury needs arising from the respective operating cycles, or the financial leverage necessary for investment projects, as a complement or alternative to European funds.

Investment Funds, which include Private Equity, Venture Capital Companies, Business Angels, among others, are perceived as less attractive to companies, with around 50% stating they have little or no interest in this instrument. The prospect of opening up capital continues to be viewed with suspicion, even though these are instruments that can enable, in addition to capital influx, support for strategic management, opening up markets, or creating business partner networks.
