6th Edition of the Inventa Barometer: Portugal Consolidates Its Path of Protected Innovation

Yunit Consulting announces the Inventa Barometer, reinforcing its partnership with Inventa in supporting innovation and protecting the knowledge of Portuguese companies.

The 6th edition of the Inventa Barometer - Made in Portugal Patents is now available, a study that offers an integrated view of the evolution of the national patent system. The latest edition shows sustained growth in the number of applications, reinforcing that the country is on the right track to protect and value its knowledge on the global innovation map.

Highlights of the 6th Edition:

  • University Leadership: There is a change at the top of the national ranking, with the University of Aveiro taking the lead in the number of patent families (42 families and 59 associated applications).
  • Success Stories (CleoCare): The Barometer includes the journey of the Braga-based startup CleoCare, responsible for SenseGlove. This sensorised glove uses artificial intelligence to support breast self-examination, promoting more accessible and personalised prevention.
  • Institutional Testimony: Artur Silva, Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro, highlights the institution's commitment to innovation and the protection of R&D results, reaffirming the central role of universities in transferring knowledge to the market.
  • Statistics and Technological Areas: In 2024, patent applications in Portugal rose to 780. Areas linked to Human Necessities lead with 37.6%, followed by Chemistry and Metallurgy (24.8%).

Structural Challenges

Despite the growth, challenges persist, such as the concentration of inventive activity on the coast — with the North (323 applications), Centre (191) and Lisbon (162) regions leading the volume of filings. Internationalisation has gone from a strategic option to an essential condition, with the US and Europe remaining the main destinations for national inventions.
